Train Up a Child

Train up a Child

Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Train - to exercise, disciple, teach and form by practice

  • Dedicate (used in Deut 20:5; 2 Chron 2:4)

  • Correction- that which is intended to rectify or cure a fault; Prov 23:13

    • Training is proactive

    • Correction is reactive

  • Training requires consistency

Tips for training

  1. Pick a time

    1. Uninterrupted

    2. Time to dedicate to it (not while you’re trying to do multiple things at once)

  2. Pick a goal

    1. Choose what’s important to you

    2. Practice it, make a game of it

    3. Parents need to be in agreement

  3. Love ‘em unconditionally

    1. Beware of your angry spirit

    2. Don’t be focused on how bad behavior makes you look as a parent- that is pride

    3. Beware of your child’s angry spirit

      1. Anger proceeds rebellion

      2. Try to understand/study your child to make sure his/her needs are being met- Myers Briggs personality indicator tells strengths and weaknesses

  4. Book on child rearing - Cynthia Tobias “You Can’t Make Me” (she is the author of “The Way They Learn” where a lot of our TEFL notes came from)

  5. Realize you can’t change them- only God can
